This course offers a comprehensive introduction to biotechnology, focusing on the fundamental techniques and their applications. It begins with an overview of biotechnology, including definitions, scope, and its development in India. Students will learn about tools in recombinant DNA technology, including restriction enzymes, cloning vectors, and various types of plasmids and viral vectors. The course covers methods of gene transfer, including chemical, physical, and biological techniques, along with the creation of cDNA and genomic libraries. Essential techniques such as blotting, polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequencing are explored, alongside advanced molecular markers and site-directed mutagenesis. The course also delves into animal biotechnology, highlighting cell and tissue culture, transgenic animals, and gene therapy, as well as biotechnology applications in healthcare, including gene products like Humulin and biosensors. Industrial, agricultural, and environmental biotechnological applications are addressed, including fermentation technology, transgenic plants, and biopesticides. Additionally, the course introduces nanobiotechnology and its applications, and covers important aspects of intellectual property rights, biosafety, and bioethics. This course provides a solid foundation for understanding and applying biotechnology in various fields.
